Children living with HIV are especially vulnerable. Their immune systems are still developing, which means the disease can progress more quickly and increase the risk of advanced HIV disease. In this video, Dr. Veni Nabitaka explains why children are more likely to move from early HIV infection to advanced stages and why timely diagnosis and treatment are critical. When children present with advanced HIV disease, they face a higher risk of severe opportunistic infections and death. Yet too many children are still diagnosed late or struggle to access appropriate care. Addressing these gaps is essential to reducing preventable child mortality and getting the global HIV response back on track. Through the Unitaid funded THRIVE project, led by the Clinton Health Access Initiative in partnership with AfroCAB and Penta, we are expanding access to child friendly prevention, screening and treatment tools for advanced HIV disease. By strengthening health systems and supporting community led solutions, THRIVE aims to ensure every child living with HIV can grow, dream and thrive.
