The film Road House was released in 1989 and was meant to be a follow-up starring vehicle for Patrick Swayze after the massive success of Dirty Dancing. Sadly, Road House was not initially received quite as well as Dirty Dancing had been, though it has since attained the status of a cult classic for a variety of reasons. That kickboxer was Benny Urquidez, who had previously choreographed some of Jackie Chan’s early features. According to Benny, Patrick was such a natural at the sport that Benny tried to talk him into giving up Hollywood stardom and pursuing a career in competitive kickboxing. Other things that helped make Road House gritty include the fact that many stuntmen were featured in the film. Today, Road House continues to live on in a variety of ways. It was given a direct-to-video sequel in 2006, though fans received that sequel poorly. The original was subsequently adapted into a well-received off-Broadway play, and there have even been recent talks of a gender-swapped reboot with wrestler Ronda Rousey.
