Welcome aboard one of India’s most unique heritage railway lines – the Matheran Light Railway (MLR) – as we journey from Neral to Matheran, a hill station nestled in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. This video captures the entire ride through lush greenery, hairpin curves, sharp gradients, and colonial-era stations, offering a rare look into the workings of a narrow-gauge mountain railway still operational today. 🌿 About the Route: The Matheran Light Railway, established in 1907, is a 2-foot narrow gauge line covering a distance of approximately 21 km from Neral (elevation ~40 m) to Matheran (elevation ~800 m). The journey takes around 2 hours and winds through dense forests, deep valleys, and stunning mountain vistas. With no overhead wires and diesel locomotives hauling vintage coaches, this route is a dream for any rail enthusiast. 🚉 Halts Covered in the Video: NRLN/Neral Junction – The starting point of the journey, connects to the Mumbai–Pune mainline. JTT/Jummapatti – A charming halt located near waterfalls and sharp curves. WTP/Waterpipe – A scenic stretch known for misty views and monkey sightings. ANLG/Aman Lodge – Final stop before Matheran where vehicular traffic ends. MAE/Matheran – A beautiful old-world station, with vintage benches and colonial charm. 🔥 Railfan Highlights: Diesel locomotives of the NDM1 class in action Sound of the rails, curve screeches, and gradients for that authentic narrow-gauge vibe Captures the sharpest curves, tightest clearances, and trackside greenery Beautiful shots of the train manoeuvring through forests and crossing bridges 🎥 Camera Angles & Equipment: This video includes multiple camera angles – frontal shots, window views, and station halts – all captured in high definition to showcase the full beauty of the Matheran Light Railway. Filmed with Apple iPhone with sound from Apple EarPods, with minimal edits to preserve the authenticity of the journey. 📜 Historical Context: Built by Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy in the early 1900s, this line was once operated by steam engines and has survived natural calamities and threats of closure. It remains a UNESCO World Heritage contender and is one of the few remaining operational narrow gauge hill railways in India, alongside the Darjeeling and Kalka-Shimla railways.
