Southpaws Irish Andy Lee and Scotsman Craig McEwan met in a scheduled 10 rounder, producing one of the most exciting bouts of the last decade. As standout amateurs, both competed and Lee had a victory over him. Interestingly, their trainers were not present during this bout as Manny Stewart (Lee’s trainer) was away to train Miguel Cotto while Freddie Roach (McEwan’s trainer) was away to train Manny Pacquiao. Both also had similar beginnings to their pro careers; after their amateur careers, Lee left Ireland for Detroit in search of Stewart at his legendary Kronk Gym while McEwan left Scotland for Los Angeles in search of Roach’s Wild Card Gym. Prefight records; Lee 24(18)-1, McEwan 19(10)-0. In the opening round, Lee clearly won by landing a number of clean right hooks, his best punch. But McEwan started to find his rhythm in the following stanza and connect effectively with punches in bunches as opposed to the Irishman who tried to score single home run right hands most of the time and arguably won rounds 2, 3, 4 & 5 due to greater precision and higher output. Towards the end of round 5, Lee was bad;y wobbled but managed to survive the onslaught. In round 6, Andy managed to mount a comeback in the last 60 seconds as by landing at a higher rate due to decreased output by the Edinburgher who started to tire. In the following round, Lee’s confidence began to build up again as he found his mark with both hands which all started when he managed to use his left. With McEwan fatigued, the Irishman bagged rounds 7, 8 & 9 by connecting effectively and scored a knockdown with a thunderous left 30 seconds before the end of the 9th. Craig made it up despite evidently hurt but with little time left, Andy was unable to finish. Going into the 10th and final round, Harold Lederman unofficially scored the fight even at 85 apiece. However, Lee refused to leave it to the judges; going for the kill in the first minute and landing pulverizing punches to earn a tremendous come-from-behind knockout about 2 minutes before the final bell in a spectacular finish as referee Steve Smoger waved off the fight soon as the Scotsman hit the canvas for the second time in the fight. At the time of the finish, the 3 judges had it 86-84 & 85-85 (2x). By CompuBox Punch Stats, McEwan connected with 120 more punches than Lee; 23 more jabs and 97 more power shots. On December 13th 2015, Lee became the WBO World Middleweight Champion by stopping Matvey Korobov in the 6th round. He would lose the title to Billy Joe Saunders via MD12 a year after in his first defense. Enjoy this highlights of one of the best bouts of the 2010s, and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE! Keep punching.
