Welcome to SYNAPSE 101… This is part 3 of the Lateral aspect of the gross cortical anatomy of the cerebral hemisphere. Today we will discuss the lateral aspect of occipital lobe and temporal lobe The parieto-occipital sulcus separates the parietal lobe anteriorly and occipital lobe posteriorly. Trans-occipital sulcus. The occipital lobe with the occipital pole is Brodmann’s area 17 as the primary visual cortex And around it, are Brodmann’s area 18 and 19 which are Visual Association Cortices The Lateral sulcus also called Sylvian fissure, separates frontal and parietal lobe from temporal lobe. There are 3 temporal gyri seen on the lateral aspect of the temporal lobe And these are : (1) the superior temporal gyrus which is just below the Lateral sulcus The Brodmann’s area 41 and 42 also called as the Heschl gyrus is the primary auditory cortex Brodmann’s 22 is Wernicke area that functions for language After which is a superior temporal sulcus mentioned on earlier video At the end of superior temporal sulcus is angular gyrus, Brodmann area 39, which is part of the inferior parietal lobule is responsible for language, math and cognition. Below the superior temporal sulcus is the (2) middle temporal gyrus Then the medial temporal gyrus followed by the (3) inferior temporal gyrus separated by middle temporal sulcus. This completes the Lateral aspect of the gross cortical anatomy of the cerebral hemisphere.
