Kaufman, known for defending high-profile figures like Jean-Pierre Bemba and Aisha Gaddafi, claims the ICC lacks jurisdiction, as the Philippines withdrew from the court in 2019. He also alleges that Duterte’s arrest was unlawful and politically motivated, pointing to tensions between Duterte and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The ICC, however, maintains that it has authority over alleged crimes committed before the withdrawal and insists that due process was followed.
