Heat affects your outdoor unit in 3 ways: radiatively, conductively, and convectively. Yes, manufacturers build their units to withstand the sun and work to reduce radiative heat that turns conductive (to limit the amount of this heat that makes it to your condenser coil), but what about convective heat off your roof or patio or side of your house? This will have some effect and potentially great effect as you approach the upper boundary of the operating range for your mini-split, whole-house split, or rooftop unit. And, the problem is that as you approach the upper operating range of your unit, the efficiency and BTUs decrease. So, a few degrees cooler air intake is meaningful in such situations for both efficiency (dollar spend) and comfort. #minisplit
