The Liberation of Dachau by the U.S. 42nd Infantry With Erin Faith Allen Part of our Entering Germany and Crossing the Rhine series • Entering Germany and Crossing the Rhine - ... Part of our Holocaust series • The Holocaust Also part of our 1945 series • 1945 Also part of our 80th Anniversary Series • 80th Anniversary Special On April 29, 1945, patrols of the U.S. Army’s 42nd Infantry Division discovered some of the very worst crimes of Nazi Germany at the notorious Dachau concentration camp. It was a cold and sunny late spring day when the men of the 42nd approached the small town 10 miles from Munich. A German phrase had become infamous about the location: "Lieber Herr Gott, mach mich stumm, Das ich nicht nach Dachau komm," Janowitz wrote. "Dear God, make me silent, that I may not come to Dachau." Priests, Roma, homosexuals, and of course Jews, along with French, Pole, Czech, Yugoslav and Russian nationals were housed at Dachau and its 30 major subcamps. There were also 123 even smaller camps, holding forced laborers for work in underground munitions factories. Erin Faith Allen returns to WW2TV to talk about the liberation. Erin is a multi-media artist and writer, the proud daughter of a Vietnam veteran, and granddaughter of three veterans of WWII with multiple other ancestors having served during times of conflict. To date, her work with veterans, survivors, and others impacted by war has directly impacted three hundred families and counting. https://www.erinfaithallen.com/ A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary, Erin was made an honorary citizen of Schweighouse-sur-Moder, France for her dedication to preserving the legacy of the town’s liberation from Nazi rule. She writes articles for the Rainbow Reveille, the 42nd Infantry Division’s newspaper since 1917, and is a published author and editor of books. https://www.fortitude-research.com/ Erin is the founder of Stories of War, a 501(c)(3) non-profit on a mission to honor the individual stories of those impacted by the multi-faceted legacy of war through documentary films.
