Bantigue (Pemphis Acidula) is a very good bonsai material. It naturally has small leaves and an old and seasoned trunk. It used to be the holy grail of Pinoy bonsai hobbyists. There are, however, setbacks to it. One, hunting for bantigue is prohibited by the government, by the DENR particularly. You can go to prison and may be fined with a huge deal of money if caught with hunted bantigue bonsai materials. Two, bantigues are needed to be in their natural habitat. Why? They are special for environmental protection. Just like the mangroves, they shield our coastal lands from being swept by the sea. Three, bantigue bonsais do not last. Their life span is only limited to 8-12 years. I, on my part, have experimented on different techniques to try to somehow lengthen its life span but I have lost quite a number of bantigue bonsais and a considerable amount of resources in the process. In the end, I just ended my quest and decided to focus on different species of "tabang" trees. So, again, bantigue is a very good bonsai material. But then again, for the aforementioned reasons, we do not encourage it. There are, after all, better bonsai materials than bantigues. And we shall be featuring these better bonsai materials in our next episodes. Only at Pinoy Cooltour and HerStory.
