White Eyebrow Kung Fu (from the air!)

Location: Hou Tou Pi Scenic Area (虎頭埤風景區, 台灣台南新華社) Form: White Eyebrow Cross Pattern Set (白眉派 - 鷹爪十字扣打拳) As a traditional kung fu form, the Cross Pattern set (鷹爪十字扣打拳) ticks all the three essential boxes for me: It contains effective self-defence skills It feels great to perform as an athletic exercise It is eye-catching as performance art But the Cross Pattern set is so much more. It is a brilliantly designed sequence of movements: each movement spring-loads the next, generating a kinetic energy that flows and builds from the opening stance to the very end. It is my favourite traditional kung fu form. Grandmaster Zhang Li-Quan (張禮泉) incorporated sets from other systems into the Pai Mei syllabus in the formative years of the style. The Cross Pattern form is originally from the Wanderers Style (AKA Gypsy Style) - 流民派 – and was taught to Grandmaster Zhang by his teacher Lin Shi (林石).
