Principals detail Robin Bain's spiral into depression School principal say's Robin Bain had lost interest in Life! A former school principal shared his concern about horror stories Robin Bain published in a school newsletter. Kevin MacKenzie has given evidence for the defence at David Bain's retrial for the murders of his family, at the High Court in Christchurch. Mr MacKenzie assisted at Taieri Beach School after the killings. He has told the court he became aware of the 21 stories, which had been published in the school's newsletter and written by children. Mr MacKenzie said some were concerning; including one about shooting a hundred police, and another about a family being killed. He said he just could not conceive of how a principal could authorise the publication. The first defence witness this morning, also a former principal, said that by 1994 Robin Bain had become involved in his own thoughts and lacked motivation. Malin Stone first got to know Robin Bain in 1991 when they were both principals of small schools. He said at that stage he considered him a mentor, as he gave lots of advice and was laid back with a great sense of humour. Mr Stone told the court by 1994 Robin Bain had lost interest in school and life. He said the two schools went on a joint camp that year, but Robin Bain disappeared to his cabin on the second day and did not do a lot for the rest of the camp.
