As 2026 begins, Southeast Texas looks back on the defining stories of 2025, marked by tragedy, community resilience, and significant changes. KFDM/Fox Southeast Texas reporter Taylor Justice reports on the top stories from the past year. The year of 2025 started with a shocking terror attack in New Orleans' French Quarter on New Year's Day, orchestrated by Beaumont native Shamsud-Din Jabbar, leaving 14 dead and 57 injured. Jabbar's family publicly condemned the attack. We spoke with Jabbar's brother, who says his family condemns the attack. In January, a rare snowfall in Southeast Texas brought joy but also controversy when a viral video showed a baby being used to wipe snow from a car windshield in Port Arthur, prompting Child Protective Services' involvement. April saw tragedy at the Port Arthur LNG plant, where a scaffolding collapse killed three workers and injured two others. An internal report by Bechtel Corporation cited safety protocol failures. The summer brought devastating floods in the Texas Hill Country on July 4, claiming over 130 lives, including five with ties to Southeast Texas. Communities rallied with support through ribbons, vigils, and fundraisers. Closure came in 2025 with the discovery of Cristi Ruso's remains after a three-and-a-half-year search. The Buna mother's killer, Colby Tatum, confessed and was sentenced to 20 years. In another Jasper County missing person's case, four suspects were arrested in the murder of Joshua Larkin, missing since 2022, providing long-awaited answers for his family. A decades-old cold case in Beaumont was solved with the discovery of Kimberly Langwell's body, leading to the conviction of her former boyfriend, Terry Rose Sr., who was sentenced to 40 years. November's local elections saw Beaumont's first bond election in over 40 years, with voters approving only infrastructure improvements. The Texas Education Agency announced a state takeover of Beaumont ISD due to multiple failing campuses, set to begin before the 2026 school year. Ending the year, Buddhist monks journeyed through Southeast Texas promoting peace, despite challenges from a car crash in Dayton that injured two monks, one requiring leg amputation. Their journey continues to inspire unity.
