Join us for NYC JEWELRY WEEK 2023! NYC Jewelry Week is a week-long celebration of jewelry happening in-person in NYC and virtually wherever you are November 13 - 19, 2023. Virtual Tour of the Gübelin Gem Museum Exploring gemstones and legacy The Gübelin Gem Museum located in Lucerne opened its doors in summer 2023. In honour of the renowned Gem Lab’s 100th anniversary, Gübelin has created a place to share its knowledge about gemstones as well as the history of the family-owned company, founded in 1854. The first part of the talk will lead you through the museum beginning with the six generations of this Swiss family and the fascinating stories behind their achievements. The display ‘Gübelin through Time’ shows how the company began as watchmakers in 1854, then went on to create jewellery by 1923 when the cornerstone for the Gem Lab was set, to ensure the quality and authenticity of gemstones. Further displays present the ground-breaking research by Eduard Josef Gübelin (1913–2005), who ranks among the fathers of modern gemmology, known for his research into the inner world of gemstones as a diagnostic tool. The second part of the talk describes the background behind the 174 gemstones on display selected from the unique Gem Reference Collection of 28,000 gems, considered the most complete of its kind in the world. An overview will be given of the history of the Gem Lab, alongside the pioneering research, photomicrography and current innovate analytical possibilities of Gemtelligence, as well as the mission and technologies of Provenance Proof. The museum is also the new home of the Gübelin Academy. Juliana Landmann's passion for gemmology started at the age of seven when she had the chance to accompany her father to the Tucson Gem & Mineral show. It was love at first sight, and since then, she knew her career would have to involve gemstones and people. After her studies in Business & Marketing and Jewellery Design, Juliana managed her own jewellery brand in Brazil. Later, she moved to London, where she studied at the renowned Gemmological Association of Great Britain and worked for several years at De Beers Jewellers. Over time, her enthusiasm for helping people grew stronger, leading her to become an accredited coach and trainer. In 2021, Juliana combined her passions and joined the Gübelin Academy where she shares her expertise with students from all over the world in her warm-hearted and inspiring classes. Beatriz Chadour-Sampson is an international jewellery historian, author and lecturer based in England. Her publications range from the classical world to the present day and include her doctoral thesis on the Italian goldsmith Antonio Gentili da Faenza (1980) and catalogues for the jewellery collection of the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Cologne (1985) and for the historical rings in the Alice and Louis Koch Collection, Switzerland (1994). She was consultant curator for the redesign of the William and Judith Bollinger Jewellery Gallery at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2004-2008) and guest curator of its Pearls exhibition (2013-14). The descendants of Alice and Louis Koch have entrusted her as curator of the collection for the past thirty-five years and today she continues to advise the Swiss National Museum, Zurich, where the collection is kept today.
