Lesson 5: Water Colour Techniques Heron Painting

For our fourth lesson in this series, we’ll be exploring colour with watercolours and trying out a few techniques to help us layer texture and tone. We’ll also combine some of the pen techniques we’ve enjoyed in previous classes. Here are four techniques we’ll experiment with: 1. Wet on Dry Paper: This creates distinct brush strokes that stay crisp and don’t spread. 2. Wet on Wet Paper: Perfect for letting colours merge and spread naturally on the paper. 3. Lifting (while wet): You can remove colour from wet paint using a clean, wet brush or a clean, dry brush. 4. Lifting (when dry): Lifting colour from dry paint—both lifting techniques are useful for adding highlights. 5. Dragging - creating a line of colour allowing one side to bleed using water. 6. Glazing - Layering colour strokes over dry ones to create a layering effect.
