Daily Operation: Missy Elliott and "Da Real World" (June 22, 1999)

On June 22, 1999, Missy Elliott released her sophomore album, 'Da Real World', made entirely with her Virginia Beach partner and producer, Timbaland. 'Da Real World' was the followup to the rapper/singer/producer/songwriter’s breakthrough 1997 debut, 'Supa Dupa Fly'. Elliott originally titled the project She’s a Bitch, and the song by that name remained the album’s lead single. Da Real World was certified platinum in 2000. It featured appearances by established acts including Aaliyah and Lil Kim, as well as future superstars Eminem and Beyoncé. Third single, “Hot Boyz (Remix)” added new verses from Nas, Eve and Q-Tip. After the success of 'Supa Dupa Fly', Elliott and Timbaland had become even more demand within the music industry. Their unique sound and futuristic perspective were widely copied by other producers and artists. Much of the playfulness of their past work was absent from 'Da Real World', which may be why it wasn’t as celebrated as Elliott’s debut. While eventually the followup 'Miss E…So Addictive' regained her previous level of success, 'Da Real World' remains an underrated part of Elliott’s catalog.
