In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on the new ÖBB-Koralmbahn/ÖBB-Drautalbahn/ÖBB-Jauntalbahn/ÖBB-Lavanttalbahn from Klagenfurt to Wolfsberg in 4K/60 frames per second. This journey takes us along an interesting mix of lines in the south of Austria. From Klagenfurt we travel on the ÖBB Drautalbahn and come to the new ÖBB Koralmbahn high-speed line (Klagenfurt in Carinthia - Graz in Styria). This is a 130-kilometer-long new line with 50 kilometers of tunnels, over 100 bridges and 23 modern stations and stops, only a few of which are still under construction. It is a double-track, electrified high-speed line. Construction began in 1998. Its centerpiece - the Koralm Tunnel - is currently the sixth longest railway tunnel in the world and almost 33 km long. The first section of the line between Klagenfurt and St. Paul im Lavanttal was put into operation on December 7, 2023. When the entire line opens at the end of 2025, it will shorten the travel time between Graz and Klagenfurt to 45 minutes. Apart from the westernmost 15 km at the Klagenfurt (western) end, most of the line is new construction, with loops to and from a section of the existing network to allow trains to serve Bleiburg. The western 31.1 km between Klagenfurt and Mittlern partially uses the route of the former ÖBB Drautalbahn to Maribor, where there is a double-track upgrade and some flattened curves. The eastern 21.9 km from Mittlern to St. Paul are mostly new, apart from the 429 m long and 96 m high Jauntal Bridge over the Drau, which was used by trains on the old route, the so-called ÖBB Jauntalbahn. The bridge only opened in 1964 and will be reinforced rather than replaced and double-tracked as part of the Koralmbahn work in 2023 and 2024. Unfortunately, the noise barriers prevent you from seeing any views of the stunning scenery. Between the Jauntal Bridge and St. Paul, three tunnels were built on a new route, namely at Langer Berg (3,096 m), the Granitztal enclosure (430 m) and in Deutsch Grutschen (2,550 m). St. Paul station was also relocated to a location 2.5 km northwest of the city center. Although not part of the Koralm Railway corridor itself, the 19 km line between St. Paul and Wolfsberg (ÖBB-Lavanttal Railway) was also electrified as part of the latest work package so that it can be incorporated into the Carinthian S-Bahn network. The new Koralm Railway largely does not require any external signals (except for light shunting signals) and is set up for ETCS-L2 operation. Operations are currently controlled from the Central Operations Control Center (BFZ) Villach, or alternatively from the BFZ Wörgl or Innsbruck.
