In the history of medieval England, she stands alongside figures like Katherine Swynford and Alice Perrers. Shore was the only lover of King Edward IV to whom he remained consistently devoted, with their relationship lasting at least seven years, if not longer. Known by her given name, Elizabeth, she gained significant political influence. However, she wielded this power with such restraint that even her harshest critics could scarcely find fault with her on this matter. Interestingly, her most fervent opponent was not Queen Elizabeth Woodville but Edward's youngest brother, Richard. He disliked her even before he became King, when he was Duke of Gloucester. Acting as Lord Protector for his nephew, Edward V, Richard sought to have Jane sentenced to death. Upon ascending as King Richard III, he continued his campaign against her with even greater vigor.
