Join our journey from Colombo to Jaffna by train.

Join us on our journey north from Colombo Fort station to Jaffna. Through paddy fields and jungle and then open land and coastal scrub. Hanging out of the open door to get a better view at 115kph is scary stuff. Our seats were in an air-conditioned carriage, and were fairly comfortable for the six-and-a-half hour journey, all for $18AUD ($12USD) for two. The train leaves Colombo at 5:30am and tickets need to be bought in advance as it fills quickly. You can buy online, but need to pick up a paper ticket at the station before travelling. There is a small kiosk on board selling basic snacks and tea, but best to bring some snacks and drinks with you. Google maps estimate that driving by car would take approximately 7+ hours, and if you are hiring a driver that will cost at least $100USD, possibly more, so the train is good value in both time and money.
