The mighty Niagara Falls is famous for its beauty and is a valuable source of hydroelectric power. Balancing tourist, commercial, and industrial demands has been a challenge for the stewards of the falls since the 1800's. The iconic Horseshoe Falls is featured in this video. Here are some measures of its size and might: Horseshoe Falls is almost 60m (200ft) high, and is about 800m (2,600 ft) wide. The peak flow over Horseshoe Falls was recorded at 6,370 cubic meters (225,000 cubic ft) per second - that's about 5,000 big bathtubs full of water every second ! The average annual flow rate is about 40% of that, since it is a direct function of the Lake Erie water elevation, which typically peaks in late spring. 90% of the total flow goes over Horseshoe Falls, while the balance is diverted to hydroelectric facilities and then on to the two smaller falls: the American Falls and and the smaller Bridal Veil Falls (adjacent on its southern side) are included in brief cameos in the video.
