In the orchard, no two apples ripen at the same time. As Dave Gleason shares, geography plays a quiet but mighty role in that rhythm. Each variety follows its own timeline, from the first signs of bloom to the moment it reaches perfect ripeness, ranging anywhere from 60 days for early cherries to nearly 170 days for late-season apples. That natural spread shapes everything from harvest schedules to marketing plans. The season begins in early June with cherries and stretches through mid-November, sometimes even longer when conditions allow. In Washington State, apples reach their peak within that 170-day window, a pace that perfectly suits the region’s cool fall climate. As the temperatures drop, the fruit develops its rich red color and complex sugars, the staple of Washington-grown apples. Throughout harvest, our orchard teams move with intention. Each block is carefully evaluated, and each day brings adjustments. Even as this year’s fruit comes off the trees, we’re already thinking about the next season: what went well, what can be refined, what lessons the orchard is teaching us, etc. In the moments between the busyness, there’s quiet beauty to be found. On still mornings, the air is cool, and the wind is absent. The trees seem to breathe again, leaves catching the light, storing energy, and preparing for the year ahead. Soon, those leaves will shift to gold and fall, marking the end of another season. To learn more visit http://www.superfreshgrowers.com/
