Ramadan–Election Clash Sparks Turnout Fears Across FCT | Ask Nigeria Exclusives! View exclusively on social media, join us for accurate and up-to-date information on the current events shaping Nigeria. NG As the chairmanship election for Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) draws near, growing concern is mounting among residents over its scheduled overlap with Ramadan, the sacred Islamic month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. The timing of the polls has sparked debate across Abuja’s Area Councils, with fears that the clash could affect voter turnout, security, and the overall credibility of the electoral process. On January 24, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) formally called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the FCT Area Council elections, citing the challenges posed by Ramadan fasting. The appeal has since gained traction, with residents in communities such as Nyanyan and AMAC voicing similar concerns about the physical and spiritual demands of the period. Miss Mujanatu Hassan, a resident of Nyanyan, described the situation as troubling. She noted that voting during fasting hours could be physically draining, particularly with polling often beginning early in the morning when many observers of Ramadan are resting or preparing for the day. According to her, the added stress of queuing under harsh weather conditions while fasting may discourage participation. Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Abdulganiyu Usman of AMAC Area Council said the overlap could dampen the usual vibrancy of polling stations and potentially reduce turnout. While acknowledging that the election date may be difficult to change, he urged authorities to ensure adequate security and logistical support to guarantee a peaceful process.
