Released by Midway Games in 1995, it followed the massive success of Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II. Here's a breakdown of the history and significance of MK3: MK3 continues the saga of the battle between the Earthrealm and Outworld. This time, Shao Kahn, the emperor of Outworld, finds a loophole to invade Earthrealm directly by resurrecting Queen Sindel (Kitana’s mother) on Earth, which allows him to bypass the usual rules set by the Elder Gods. Shao Kahn invades Earthrealm and begins merging it with Outworld. He resurrects Sindel in Earthrealm, which allows him to physically step into Earth. Earth’s warriors, including Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Sub-Zero, must stop him before Earth is completely taken over. Introduced a "Run" button, which sped up gameplay compared to previous entries. Featured the "Kombat Kodes" system, allowing players to enter codes before matches for special effects. Added "Chain Combos" (a.k.a. dial-a-combos), a major shift from the previous fighting mechanics. Included three types of finishers: Fatalities, Friendships, and Animalities. New and Returning Characters New Fighters: Stryker – a riot control cop Kabal – a disfigured ex-Black Dragon member Sindel – queen with sonic scream powers Sheeva – a female Shokan warrior Nightwolf – a Native American shaman Cyrax, Sektor, Smoke – Lin Kuei cyborg ninjas Returning Characters: Liu Kang Sub-Zero (unmasked) Sonya Blade Jax Shang Tsung Kano (Note: Some fan-favorite characters like Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Kitana were initially missing from vanilla MK3.) Versions and Updates Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) Added more characters (like Scorpion, Kitana, Reptile). Improved AI and balance. Included the "Aggressor" bar to speed up fights. Mortal Kombat Trilogy (1996) Included all characters from MK1 to MK3. Introduced a new feature: Aggressor Mode and "Brutalities". MK3 was praised for its depth, fast pace, and edgy design. It was ported to multiple platforms: SNES, Genesis, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, PC, etc. Helped solidify Mortal Kombat as a pop culture phenomenon in the '90s.
