Lee Health Trauma Center has a New Address

For more than two decades, the only trauma center between Sarasota and Miami has been housed inside Lee Memorial Hospital. "Southwest Florida is growing exponentially and we need to keep up with caring for the population as it grows. We are moving into a new space which accommodates larger trauma bays, allowing us to care for more patients in an environment that wasn’t possible at Lee Memorial Hospital," said Noah Bourk, Lee Health Trauma Program Manager. Now—patients in critical need will be airlifted or transported to the new Trauma Center located at Gulf Coast Medical Center. The move will double the number of trauma bays, providing one specifically designed for mom and baby. "The move from Lee to Gulf Coast allows us to have a larger space with newer equipment and also to be more centrally located to serve all five counties in our trauma district," he said. The move is scheduled for early 2022—making it the first time in state history that a health system has ever moved a trauma center. "In preparation for the move from Lee Memorial to Gulf Coast, we have been cross-training not only the nursing staff but also the physicians in the emergency department. Our trauma intensive care unit, all of those nurses will move from Lee Memorial to Gulf Coast," Bourk said.
