The Carbon River area in the NW corner of Mount Rainier National Park is kind of the "forgotten corner" of the park. It's usually wet, closed outright alot, and even when open; it is a long day hike to get to any of the destinations since the road has been closed to vehicles since the floods of 2006. When it is open, howerver, there are a couple of pretty cool spots to get to. If you're willing to put in a bit of walking. The first destination is Green Lake and Ranger Falls, which will be visited at a later date. The second is today's little adventure: Chenuis Falls. This rather large waterfall is located on the north side of the Carbon River, and is only .5 miles away from the roadway. The problem is that because the road is closed to vehicles, it is a 3.5 mile saunter along the road to get to the tralhead. A valid option for all adventures in the Carbon River area is to ride bikes to the trailheads, before continuing on foot. Nash and I have done that before on the channel - buuuuuuuut I lost the footage of it. So the only evidence of that day is the Ipsut Falls and OLD Carbon River Long Exposures. I'll tag those below. Besides, with a group of 8 people, bringing that many bikes is not really a godd option. The walk along the roadway is unremarkable save for the fact that you are walking through one of the few inland rainforests in the world - all thanks to The Mountain. there is a section of road that is completely blown out from the river between the Green Lake and Chenuis Falls trailheads, but it is still easy walking. Once you arrive at the Chenuis Falls TH, you will have to cross a series of log bridges over the many branches of the Carbon River to reach the waterfall. Check the park website for the status of these bridges, as they wash out often and usually are only maitained between Memorial Day and October. The base of the falls has a nice little gravel bar to hang out on. You can also wander up and down the gravel bars of the Carbon River itself if you want, just remember wehre you came from. Nash, Dad and I also climbed to the top of the waterfall, but I reccommend you just enjoy the video of that. Sometime soon, we will ride bikes again up the Carbon, all the way to Ipsut Campground at the end of the road, and go explore all 10 trail options in the area, plus make full use of the Campground for some sweet backpacking opportunities.
