Myth BustED: Patients’ Rights in the Emergency Department

It can be even hard to separate fact from fiction when it comes to your health, but emergency physicians are ready to help by tackling some of the most frequently misunderstood aspects of emergency medicine. Every patient is protected by laws that make sure emergency care is accessible in a crisis. For example, EMTALA says that every patient entering the emergency department has the right to be seen and evaluated if they have an emergency and the Prudent Layperson Standard ensures that emergency care is covered based on a person’s symptoms rather than their final diagnosis. The American College of Emergency Physicians advances emergency care on behalf of its 40,000 emergency physician members, working to make sure our health system works for them and the more than 150 million Americans they treat each year.
