He also is a faculty member at the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS). At the Cluster of Excellence Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC), Thomas coordinates the Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Integration and Feedback Control for Co-Design group of research projects. Thomas holds a Master in Architectural Design from University of Kassel, a Master of Science in Design and Computation from MIT, and a PhD in Architecture and Sustainable Design from Singapore University of Technology and Design. Before joining ICD, Thomas taught at National University of Singapore and held a position at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China. He researches the application of AI methods—such as AI reasoning, AI planning, supervised learning, optimization, and multi-variate visualization—in architectural design and construction processes and leads the development of Opossum, a machine learning-based optimization tool that has been downloaded more than 12.000 times.
