To talk at this point about Argentine empanadas being fashionable may seem out of place now. The boom seems to be at its zenith with a business that is going from strength to strength for more humble companies and premises that are still committed to 100% artisanal, although they are almost anecdotal. As has happened with other trends, franchises are monopolizing the whole cake, and the latest to arrive has been Sabores Express, directly from Argentina, and with aspirations to eat up the market. The company landed in our country a few months ago by opening its first store in the centre of Alcorcón, and since this June it has made a strong commitment to expansion, multiplying its presence throughout the Community of Madrid. They currently have 15 operational stores, including several within the capital itself, and plan to open at least a dozen more soon. The medium-term goal is to extend throughout Spain until reaching, for the time being, 100 establishments in the next two years. An ambitious plan that clearly wants to replicate the model that seems to be working so well for them in Argentina, and that in our country comes to compete directly with the hitherto leading chain, Malvón. With the boom of this in recent months, which has already been installed practically throughout Spain, we will see if the bubble will also burst or if there is really a market for so much empanada. Sabores Express presents itself by highlighting its strengths to carve out a niche in the already somewhat saturated Argentine empanada market: leadership in its country, variety of products and, above all, very, very reasonable prices. The company has more than a hundred stores in Argentina and boasts of being the leading company in the sector, not only in empanadas, but also in pizzas, as it is the great novelty compared to its direct competitors. Thin-crust and crispier pizzas, with popular flavors in the American country such as the so-called mozzarella (tomato and mozzarella-type cheese), classic ham and cheese, pepperoni or the peculiar caramel chicken. The assortment of empanadas adds up to 14 flavors with fillings that are also classic Argentinian and some more current, such as the cheeseburger, in addition to the sweet line of dulce de leche, Nutella brownie and apple crumble. The menu is completed by the chipá, small rolls that are eaten almost in one bite with cassava flour and cheese. The operation of the company is typical of a franchise of this type, working from a central operator where the products on the menu are made. From there they are distributed to the shops, where they are baked every day according to the influx of customers to try to maintain the feeling of "freshly made". Just as they do in Malvón or Las Muns, another popular company, they heat them in a couple of minutes in the oven to eat them at the moment, or they can be taken as is to reheat them at home. They deliver what they promise The tasting at home of a variety of six savory empanadas and two sweet ones, plus a few chipás and a ham and cheese pizza, makes it clear what the great attraction of this company is. A decent product that delivers what it promises, no more, no less. Expecting premium quality in pre-cooked empanadas from an industrial workshop, at such a low price, is absurd. There is a reason why artisans who cook 100% homemade empanadas charge them more expensive, and it shows. Exactly the same thing happens with a good Galician empanada. That said, and with an official taster in the team who is very fond of Argentine products and with extensive experience in other brands, the offer of Sabores express approves and meets expectations. They are really very cheap, with a starting price of only 1.50 euros per empanada, or 15 euros a box with a dozen. It is impossible to find them cheaper and even less so in a city like Madrid; With three units you are already well served if hunger strikes. The size is adequate, larger than what we usually call empanadillas in Spain -they remind me more of the individual Murcian empanadas-, with thin puff pastry type dough, cooked in the oven and not fried. It does not leave a greasy or very heavy sensation, and each one is marked on the edge with the name of the flavor it contains. This allows them to be less skilled with the famous Argentine repulgue, a task that requires manual dexterity and that Sabores Express saves, probably by resorting to machinery.
