The third episode on our Burning Ballerinas series is Part one of the Emma Livry story - the stunning ballerina who became a principal of the Paris Opera Ballet at the young age of 16 years old. Making her debut performance in a re-staged version of 'La Sylphide', Emma was hailed as the next incarnation of the great Marie Taglioni who the ballet was originally created upon. Taglioni would eventually become a close friend and mentor to her young prodigy, guiding her through her rapid ascension to fame and adulation from her adoring fans. Fires in the wooden frame theatres of the day were prolific and caused great concern to the heads of the theatre administration. Emma Livry now a bona fide star and celebrity of the Paris Opera Ballet, took a somewhat lackadaisical approach to the warnings of potential danger while wearing the highly flammable costumes of the day.
