Forster in NSW is one of my favourite places to visit, and having the Hobie Kayak Competition over the 12th and 13th April it was one I did not want to miss. I attended the 2024 comp and was keen to visit again and have a crack at the Bream in this beautiful system. I drove up on Thursday and camped in the caravan park for the 3 day visit. Pretty basic camp with just my Durston 2P tent, Coleman gazebo and the basics along with my Hobie Outback and all the fishing gear needed to have a crack at the Bream. Friday morning weather was perfection and I headed out on sunrise for the pre fish day. I ended up peddling 17km and stayed out for 10 hours. Time flies on a kayak and I had missed success on the day and a few bust ups where I got bricked by Bream. I met up with Andrew Death and we fished the system together. I landed Tailor, Flathead and a few Bream but generally it was pretty quiet and I was scratching my head as to what to do in the comp. Saturday DAY 1, showers were forecast and so all wet weather gear was on hand including a sneaky seat mounted umbrella that I thought would come in handy if it got heavy. I covered about 12km in the kayak and landed just the one legal Bream at .64kg. Tough day but that does not phase me. On the Saturday night heavy showers hit again and the rain was dripping into my tent and onto my head. That did not help with sleep I got a little wet. Sunday DAY 2, The weather was better and I again headed out to chase Bream. I peddled 12km again and caught a bag of just legal Bream (26cm for the comp) but could not upgrade to any bigger fish. It was great to see the gun fishos pulling in over 2kg of fish each day and so I will keep learning the tricks to catching the bigger fish. Ended up in 48th place out of 60 which is pretty average but I had three great days fishing and continue to learn about this niche style of luring Bream. Congratulations to everyone that took part and Luke Rogan from QLD for winning at Forster back to Back. I tested the new Shimano Ascenza 2-5kg 8 foot rod at Forster and loved it. It enabled me to cast long range and had some grunt to fight the bigger fish. I look forward to visiting Forster again.
