Iran has elected its new President: Masoud Pezeshkian. To be honest, like many others inside and outside Iran, I expected Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf to easily win the elections from the very beginning. Even Ghalibaf himself remained quite calm and composed throughout the process. However, the election results turned out differently. Masoud Pezeshkian was born on September 29, 1954, in Mahabad, located in West Azerbaijan province on Iran's border with Turkey. So, he will soon turn 70. Besides Persian, he is also fluent in Turkish and Kurdish. Turkish or Azerbaijani Turkish is his native language. He is a doctor by profession. The meaning of his surname reflects this. The word "Pezeshk" in Persian means "doctor" or "physician." The suffix "-yan," when it comes in a surname, roughly translates to "son of" or "related to," indicating a family's historical connection to the profession of medicine.
