Yes, of course the appeal of this Venza is the hybrid powertrain. In fact, it’s not just the appeal, but it’s the complete focus - it only comes as a hybrid It also only comes with e-AWD and a CVT transmission The Venza, though, has a bit of a weird fit in Toyota’s lineup. It’s essentially the crossover equivalent of a Camry…but the RAV4 exists….and it exists with a hybrid…and it’s cheaper in every spec than the Venza so lets try and discover if it makes sense to have two very similar SUVs in Toyotas line up. So there’s really only one reason that you’d get a Venza over a Rav4 Hybrid…and that’s that you’re too sophisticated, too wealthy, or (let’s be honest) too old to be seen in a Rav4 And this will sound familiar as with pretty much every other Toyota hybrid vehicle we’ve tested here on Downshift Under the hood is the 2.5L 4 cylinder making 176hp and with the added hybrid electrical motors it makes a total 219 hp. You have two electric motors up front, one for each wheel and a third electric motor for the rear as well. The Venza eAWD is a bit more sophisticated than the RAV4 in that it can send up to 80 percent of power to the rear wheels to help prevent front wheel slip, while the system in the RAV4 hybrid only sends up to 50 percent of power to the rear wheels. Even with the added power from the electric motor the Venza is still quite slow. 0-60 in over 7.5 seconds HOWEVER, this thing is a little handler! It loves to turn in! The front end feels sharp and dynamic on corner entry and it feels planted mid-corner! Yes, you’ve got a small engine with the 2.5L 4cylinder, a tri-motor hybrid system ,and a CVT All of that is basically ensure that no power goes to waste - in other words, to make this thing as efficient as possible And it is - this thing is rated at 39 mpg combined from the EPA and while we’ve been testing we’ve been pretty close to that You probably also care about the ride of this thing, and it’s good news here. As sporty as it turns out to be in a corner, it doesn’t achieve that by sacrificing ride quality. The ride over normal roads is really comfy, the suspension soaks up bumps really well and there’s pretty good sound isolation The visibility is good and ultimately it gives the feeling of calm behind the wheel. It’s a really nice place to spend time And one of the reasons it’s so nice to spend time in here, especially on the highway, is because you have Toyota safety sense 2.0 Some brand new vehicles like the Tundra and Sequoia are getting 2.5, but even the older 2.0 system does a very good job when you turn on “autopilot” Behind the wheel there’s a lot to like about this car, but there’s a lot to like about the Rav4 too, so let’s meet up with Matt and see if we can figure out why someone would pay more for this Start with trunk because this is where it loses over the RAV4 With the Venza, you get 28.8 cubic feet of cargo space with up to 55.1 cubes total. The RAV4 Hybrid provides 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats with up to 69.8 cubes total. The sloped roof cuts trunk space where in the RAV you get it all Rear seats are decent size But the best thing about the interior is the sunroof McLaren thing Front (start with storage/ergonomics) Nowhere to put my phone naturally The heated and cooled seat buttons are too far back The heated steering wheel button is in a completely different place and you cant see it The start button location makes no sense The rest of it is pretty good (seating position, seats, etc) Front (design) The look is good and elegant, but there’s no buttons All the “buttons” are piano black The screen is big, but it’s angled up so on a bright day it’s too dark The materials are fine, gold stitched bar They try to do fake wood and it’s really fake Front (features) HUD (lots of info, good) Largely digital cluster is nice, but it almost prioritizes fuel economy over showing speed Lots of chargers but nowhere to put anything Cameras are trash Infotainment is ok, wired ACP and AA The Venza comes standard with an 8.0-inch infotainment display and offers a 12.3-inch display is optional. JBL sound is ok Really the only cool thing is the sunroof thing
