Nestled in the misty hills of central Sri Lanka stands one of the most sacred and revered places in the Buddhist world — the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, located in the historic city of Kandy. This magnificent temple is home to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Gautama Buddha — the right canine tooth, a symbol of faith, power, and spiritual devotion for over sixteen centuries. According to ancient chronicles, the relic was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD by Princess Hemamala and Prince Dantha, who bravely smuggled it from India, hidden securely within the princess’s hair. For centuries, the Sacred Tooth Relic was more than a religious treasure — it was the very symbol of sovereignty. Whoever protected the relic held the legitimate right to rule the land. As kingdoms rose and fell — from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa, from Dambadeniya to Yapahuwa and Kurunegala — the relic journeyed across the island, until it finally found its permanent home in the Kingdom of Kandy. The present temple complex, built during the era of the Kandyan kings, stands today as a masterpiece of traditional Sri Lankan architecture. Intricate wood carvings, golden embellishments, elegant wall paintings, and finely crafted stonework reflect the artistic brilliance of a bygone era. Deep within the inner chamber lies the Sacred Tooth Relic, enshrined in a magnificent golden casket, placed inside several ornate caskets. Though the relic itself is not publicly displayed, devotees gather daily for the three sacred rituals held at dawn, noon, and evening. The rhythmic beating of traditional drums, the fragrance of incense, and the offering of fresh lotus flowers create an atmosphere filled with reverence and serenity. Each year, the city of Kandy transforms into a dazzling spectacle during the world-famous Kandy Esala Perahera. This grand procession, held in July or August, features magnificently adorned elephants, traditional Kandyan dancers, fire performers, and drummers parading through the streets, carrying the golden casket of the Sacred Relic. It is a breathtaking celebration of culture, devotion, and national pride. Recognizing its global significance, UNESCO declared the ancient city of Kandy and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic a World Heritage Site in 1988 — cementing its place among the world’s most treasured cultural landmarks. Beyond its spiritual importance, the temple is also one of Sri Lanka’s most visited tourist destinations. Set beside the tranquil Kandy Lake and surrounded by lush green hills, the temple complex offers visitors a harmonious blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Museums and royal palace buildings nearby provide deeper insight into Sri Lanka’s rich heritage. As evening falls, the temple glows under golden lights. The echo of drums fills the air. Devotees and visitors stand together in quiet admiration. In that sacred moment, time seems to slow — and the spirit of Sri Lanka reveals itself. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is not merely a monument. It is a living symbol of faith, history, and identity — the very heart of Sri Lanka. #eliphent #travel #tourist #srilanka #nature #temple #tooth
