Captions vs. Subtitles: What's the Difference?

Captions and Subtitles are frequently mistaken as being the same thing. This video explores the difference between subtitles and captions and the purpose each of them serve. Chapters: 0:00 Intro 0:35 Subtitles 1:31 Demonstration of Subtitles 1:44 Captions 2:30 Closed Captions 3:21 Open Captions 4:15 Demonstration of Captions 4:28 Conclusion 4:56 Side-by-side Comparision: Subtitles vs. Captions Transcript: (Voiceover) Disability Network Eastern Michigan's Logo appears on the screen. (Jeffrey) When it comes to making your videos accessible, it's essential that you add subtitles or captions. Subtitles and captions are often confused as the same thing however; they each have different audiences and serve different purposes. I'm going to go ahead and explain the difference between subtitles as well as the two types of captions, closed captions and open captions. (Voiceover) Subtitles. (Jeffrey) Subtitles primarily translate spoken dialogue into another language. This is intended to help viewers who do not understand the language being spoken. Subtitles also assume that people can hear the video. Therefore, they only translate spoken dialogue. Subtitles are great for content trying to reach out on an international level. So this can be good for films and even marketing videos. Some examples may include multilingual educational videos or even corporate training videos. I'm going to show you an example of a video that I made where I'm outside in a noisy environment and I am in front of Disability Network Eastern Michigan's van. Disability Network Eastern Michigan is a center for independent living. (Voiceover) Captions. (Jeffrey) Unlike subtitles, captions assume people can not hear. Captions cover not only dialogue, but also anything going on in the background such as sound effects and music. Captions are shown in the language being spoken. Captions are great not only for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, but they also help to retain audience attention and some people do better with written content than spoken content. There are two types of captions. There's closed captions and there's open captions. (Voiceover) Closed captions. (Jeffrey) Closed captions allow viewers to turn the captions on and off. Closed captions are considered more accessible. Some social media platforms allow viewers to make adjustments to the closed captions. This includes changing the font size, moving them around on the screen, and even changing the colors of the captions. That being said, there are some drawbacks to closed captions. Not all social media platforms support closed captions and also, sometimes people do not know where to find the closed caption button…to turn them on and off. (Voiceover) Open captions. Open captions are shown as Jeffrey speaks. (Jeffrey) Open captions have their advantages because they're burned onto the screen. Most people who are watching social media usually watch it on a mobile device and they're oftentimes out in the public or in the workplace. As a result, people are watching these with very low volume or on mute. So open captions can help to retain their attention longer and be able to follow along with what's being said. I'm going to go ahead and show you the video I showed you earlier. I'm in front of Disability Network Eastern Michigan's van, and you'll see an example of captions. Disability Network Eastern Michigan is a center for independent living. Now that you know how captions work, I'm going to wrap up this video by showing you the video I showed earlier. This time I'll have a side by side comparison of me in front of Disability Network Eastern Michigan van. On the left side of the screen, I will have subtitles playing. And on the right side of the screen, I'll have closed captions playing. Disability Network Eastern Michigan is a center for independent living. (Voiceover) Thanks for watching!
