http://www.migueldelaguila.com for music: [email protected] SEDUCCIÓN - (Seduction) Op.95 for flute, clarinet and piano (excerpt) Olmos Ensemble Martha Long, flute Ilya Shterenberg, clarinet Miguel del Aguila, piano Seducción is one of three related works written by Miguel del Aguila in 2007, (together with Seducción for violin/piano and Seduction Dance for flute/oboe/piano). These works share thematic material with each other and also borrow themes from the composer's previously written Clarinet Concerto No.2 and Pacific Serenade. The works begins with a lyrical and sensuous, song-like introduction evoking the style of the Brazilian Chôro and it quickly gives way to a frantic, restless dance. From then on, the work is propelled forward by a series of ostinatos and rhythmically irregular themes. Rhythm is here the captivating (seductive), element which often relegates the melodic material to a secondary role. This Latin dance, written mainly on 13/16 meter, begins with a percussive, almost primal theme that becomes increasingly breathless and ever-more-intense leading the work towards a final passionate climax. A tour de force for all three performers, Seducción demands not only stamina but outmost rhythmic accuracy through constantly shifting meters. Seducción was premiered in 2008 by Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society Festival Ensemble in Madison, Wisconsin. Martha Long, flute She is currently principal flute of the San Antonio Symphony. Martha Long holds a Bachelor's degree from the Colburn School in Los Angeles where she studied with Jim Walker. While in Los Angeles she was featured soloist during the Colburn's Outreach Week in Bovember 2009, performing Mozart's Concerto in G Major with the Colburn Orchestra for hundreds of Los Angeles public school students. She also performed volunteer for the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles, serving as a teacher and mentor to young musicians. Ilya Shterhenberg, clarinet A native of Ukraine he has performed extensively in the US and abroad. His solo performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and on Chicago's WFMT classical music network. Ilya begun his music education at the Koseto Music College in his native, Zhitomir. Since his immigration to the US in 1989 he has performed as principal clarinet with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, The Tanglewood Festival, Graz Festival (Austria), Spoleto Festival (Italy) and the Colorado Music Festival. Ilya is currently principal clarinet of the San Antonio Symphony. Miguel del Aguila Two-time Grammy nominated American composer, Miguel del Aguila's prolific music output and distinctive musical style has placed him among the most highly regarded composers of his generation. Performances or broadcasts of his works take place virtually every day of the year somewhere in the world. His catalogue of over a hundred works has been performed by over 60 orchestras, and thousands of first rate ensembles and soloists. His works, available in 27 CD recordings are published by Peermusic. He came to the attention of European audiences in 1983 when his Messages premiered at Musikvereinssaal, the home of the Vienna Philharmonic. Soon performances at Konzerthaus and Bösendorfer Hall followed, and in 1987 Peermusic published his first works. 1988 KKM-Austria and Albany Records released his first CDs. During the 90's Aguila's list of works grew as did the number of his recordings, performances and honors which by 1995 included the prestigious Kennedy Center Friedheim Award among many others. After ten years in Vienna, Aguila returned to California in 1992, where soon Los Angeles Times critics welcomed him as "One of the West Coast's most promising and enterprising young composers." He was Resident Composer at Chautauqua Institution until 2004 and Composer in Residence with New Mexico Symphony 2005- 2006. Currently Aguila's catalogue reaches 107 works for all genres, most published by Peermusic Classical and available on several CDs released by Naxos, Bridge, Dorian, Telarc, New Albion, Albany, Eroica, and others.
