Give your cabbages some help to avoid club root. If club root is known to be present, try to give plants a head start by 'growing them on' in healthy soil to a larger than normal size before planting out, or as transplants in pots of at least 3½in diameter, so that they begin growth in the affected soil with a larger than usual healthy root system. I know that club root thrives in acid soils so I try to raise my garden soil's pH to a more alkaline 7+ by adding lime it in Autumn and I check the soil pH regularly throughout the year. Temperatures below 17 °C slow or inhibit the development of club root at all stages of its life cycle so growing cabbages through Autumn and Winter when the soil is cold gives them a 'head start' These three precautions are not a 'guarantee' but they give your cabbage a better chance of success.
