2002 Walton 250cc Pro Moto 2 (The Very Best of Jean-Sebastien Roy)

This is the 2nd and final 250cc Pro moto from the 2002 Walton Grand National in Ontario, Canada. In 2002, Blackfoot Honda's Jean-Sebastien Roy #1 was just one moto away from putting the clamps on back-to-back 250cc Pro Canadian Motocross Championships. The Quebec native had put together 4 overall wins in the 7 races prior, including the last two straight. In terms of motos, JSR had won 7 out of 14. Coming into the final moto of the 8-race series, JSR's worst finish was a 6th in the first moto at this facility due to a crash on lap 1. The series began in British Columbia at Nanaimo. JSR started out with a 2-3 for 3rd overall behind the 1-1 sweep of Richmond Racing Kawasaki's Darcy Lange #3 and the 3-2 of BMG Sports KTM's Lance Smail #8. Unfortunately for Lange, a back injury in practice at the next round in Kamloops forced him to the sidelines until the 7th round of the series at Ste. Julie. Jean-Sebastien Roy seized the opportunity and won the overall with a 1-3; initially, JSR had swept the motos, but he was docked 2 positions and 5 points for passing Diablo Honda's Marco Dube #6 under a yellow flag. At rounds 3 and 4 at Calgary and Regina, Roy and Blackfoot Honda teammate #2 Blair Morgan traded moto wins; Morgan took the overall at Calgary, and JSR took Regina (both with 2-1 performances). When the series headed out East at Jolliette for round 5, Morgan and Roy continued to battle. Morgan took the first moto, but the 2nd moto was canceled due to possible thunder and lightning, which put Blair 13 pts. behind JSR. Jean-Sebastien Roy caught fire and swept the next two races at Pleasant Valley and Ste. Julie while Blair Morgan struggled with crashes; he recovered for a 2-2 at Pleasant Valley, but an 8-3 at Ste. Julie put Blair Morgan 33 points behind JSR going into the final round at Walton. Morgan would win the first moto while JSR crashed on lap 1 and came back to 6th; Morgan was now 23 behind. In this moto, #235 Chad Pederson on the Pacific Yamaha got the holeshot. Roy made short work of Pederson and ran away with moto win #8 of the 2002 season. Morgan took a close 2nd, but the real battle was behind them. It was a battle for 3rd overall in the series between Marco Dube (who battled through a wrist injury sustained in the 2nd moto at Kamloops) and Pederson's Pacific Yamaha teammate #11 Brad Hagseth, the two-time 125cc West Canadian MX champ. Dube held on for 3rd in the 2nd moto (after a 4th in moto 1), but Hagseth (despite a bad start) fought his way up to 4th (after a 2nd in moto 1) at race's end. As a result, Hagseth barely edged Dube for 3rd overall in the series by just 1 point; sadly, neither had much of a season in 2003. For Jean-Sebastien Roy, this was title #2 of 5 straight -- all aboard his CR250R. JSR would win 11 of the 16 motos in 2003, and 5 overalls out of 8. Damon Huffman was picked up by Blackfoot Honda to race in Canada from 2003-2005. Huffman won 4 motos and 2 overalls in 2003, but he battled with JSR for much of the season after Blair Morgan (who signed with Yamaha Canada for 2003) was knocked out of the series at Naniamo. For 2004, JSR took the first 5 races and 10 motos of the season, but two flat tires in the first moto at Riverglade (round 6) and a 20th place finish ruined a possible perfect season. Roy still won 13 of 16 motos and 7 of 8 overalls. 2005 saw JSR win 7 races again, including the first 5 straight and 9 of the first 10 motos (and losing only the first moto at Nanaimo to teammate Dusty Klatt), only for JSR to sit out the final round at Walton due to cracked ribs in practice at Ste. Julie. Enjoy.
