Explosions could be seen on a hillside near the Iraqi controlled town of Mosul, on the border between Iraqi and Kurdish controlled areas. Meanwhile, US troops were still at the strategically important airport at Harir, in the Kurdish controlled area of northern Iraq. Harir is a few miles outside the town of Bashur, about 30 miles (50 kilometres) northeast of the Kurd-controlled city of Irbil and 30 miles (50 kilometres) south of the Turkish border. It's thought the troops will eventually open a northern front against Iraqi government forces. US paratroopers parachuted into the Kurdish-controlled territory early on Thursday, where they linked up with Kurdish peshmerga militiamen.
