IIT Madras Hyperloop: Avishkar’s Garuda Pod Revolutionizes Transport

Join this channel to get access to perks:    / @newsstation   The Avishkar Hyperloop team, comprising over 50 students, has been working on innovative Hyperloop technologies aimed at revolutionizing transportation. They have developed a prototype pod called "Garuda," which is considered Asia's most advanced Hyperloop pod. This pod features a Linear Induction Motor designed in-house, bidirectional run capabilities, and efficient electromagnetic suspension (EMS) levitation systems. It’s powered by a 3kWh LFP battery pack and includes autonomous embedded systems for speed and direction control, showcasing significant technological progress. A major milestone was achieved with the completion of India’s first Hyperloop test track, a 410-meter facility at IIT Madras’ Discovery Campus in Thaiyur, near Chennai. This track, completed by late 2024, is designed to test Hyperloop pods in a near-vacuum environment, targeting initial speeds of 100 km/h, with plans to scale up to 600 km/h on longer tracks in the future. The project is a collaboration between the Avishkar team, TuTr Hyperloop, Indian Railways, and industry partners like L&T Construction and ArcelorMittal, marking it as Asia’s first Hyperloop test facility. The vision extends beyond testing. The team aims to develop a 350 km Hyperloop corridor, such as between Chennai and Bangalore, reducing travel time to just 30 minutes. Another proposed route is Mumbai to Pune, aiming to cut the journey to 25 minutes. These ambitious plans are supported by a grant of Rs 8.34 crore from the Ministry of Railways and involve patents, with two already granted out of six filed by Avishkar. In February 2025, IIT Madras hosted the Global Hyperloop Competition, the first of its kind in Asia, bringing together international teams to showcase pod prototypes and discuss Hyperloop’s scalability. This event underscored IIT Madras’ role as a leader in this field, with ongoing plans to expand the test track to 11.5 km for certification and eventually 100 km for operational demonstration. The Hyperloop at IIT Madras represents a blend of student innovation, academic research, and industry collaboration, positioning India as a contender in the global race to commercialize this high-speed, sustainable transportation technology. #IITMadrasHyperloop #AvishkarHyperloop #GarudaPod #HyperloopIndia
