This lyrics video may be freely used for not-for-profit worship purposes. This German hymn, a Reformation classic, dates to just before 1600. It was included in Lieder der Heiligen (Songs of the Saints), a German-language RLDS hymnal published in 1953. Over the centuries, several attempts have been made to create a singable English translation of this hymn. The translation presented here compiles and builds on the work of three earlier translators, with the goal of preserving as many ideas as feasible from the original German. (1) O Jesus Christ, bright morning star, dispersing grace and truth afar— how beauteous is thy shining! Thou royal heir of Jesse’s line, my Bridegroom and my King divine, for thee my heart is pining! Praise be to thee— good and glorious Lord victorious, rich in graces, raised up to the heavenly places! (2) Most high-born king, exalted one— of Mary and of God, the Son— most rare, most precious treasure! Thy gospel such great joy bestows! The honeyed comb, the perfumed rose yield not so sweet a pleasure. What bliss is this of thy giving, thou the living heavenly manna! I shall feast and sing “Hosanna!” (3) When with kind eyes thou turn’st to me, the radiant light of God I see, my doleful heart enlivening! Dear Christ, thy Spirit and thy word, thy body and thy blood, afford my soul its best reviving. Hold me, fold me, in thy favor, Friend and Savior! Draw me near thee; by thy warm embracing, cheer me. (4) Most richly to my yearning heart, I pray thee, bounteous Lord, impart thine ardent love undying. United to thee make me be, e’en as the branch is to the tree, thy life my life supplying. No rest my breast can discover, heavenly Lover, till it claimeth thee, whose love my soul enflameth.
