There are four pulmonary veins in total, two connected with each lung: Left inferior pulmonary vein Left superior pulmonary vein Right inferior pulmonary vein Right superior pulmonary vein The right pulmonary veins carry blood from the right lung into the left atrium of the heart, whereas the left pulmonary veins carry the blood from the left lung into the left atrium of the heart. It can then be pumped into the rest of the body via the systemic circulation. The pathway from the right atrium to the lungs and then back to the left atrium is also called pulmonary circulation.
