The city of Romny is located in Sumy region on the banks of the Sula River at the confluence of the Romen River. The area where the city of Romny is located was inhabited back in the Bronze Age. In the second millennium BC, the bearers of the Marianovsko-Bondarikha archaeological culture lived here. This is evidenced by the materials discovered in 1924 by the archaeologist N. E. Makarenko. The burial mound of the 6th—5th centuries BC, located near the city, is evidence of the habitation of Scythian farmers who were part of Scythia. In the 8th—10th centuries, an East Slavic tribe of Northerners lived on the territory of the modern city and its environs, which is confirmed by studies of the preserved Northern settlement near the city of Romen. From which the name of the culture came — Romansko-Borshchevskaya culture. In addition, two ancient Russian settlements and a burial ground (XI—XIII centuries) have been preserved on the territory of the city, where four burials have been excavated. The city was founded in the 11th century. It was first mentioned in 1095-1096 as a fortress town called "Romain" in Vladimir Monomakh's "Homily" ("to Romnu idoh"), which tells about the prince's campaign against the Polovtsian khans Aepa and Bonyak.
