On Friday I posted a surprise blog that had been weighing on my heart, and it led to a realization I think many of us share: What if the reason so many of us struggle with our emotions… is because we were taught our whole lives not to have them? Many of us grew up hearing things like: “Don’t cry.” “Stop being angry.” “You’re overreacting.” “It’s not that big of a deal.” Most of the time those words were spoken with good intentions. Parents were trying to teach behavior and respect. But somewhere along the way, many of us learned a different message — that our feelings were inconvenient, too much, or something to hide. In this video, I talk about how emotional suppression follows us from childhood into adulthood, into relationships, and even into how we parent our own children. I also share something important that many of us were never taught growing up: the difference between feelings and behavior. And from a faith perspective, it’s worth remembering something simple but powerful: God created us with emotions. Even Jesus experienced deep emotion — grief, compassion, and even anger. Our feelings were never meant to be ignored. They were meant to be understood and worked through. Healing often begins when we give ourselves permission to do something many of us were never taught: Feel. If this message resonates with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. What’s something you were told about emotions growing up that you now realize might not have been healthy? ⸻ Read the blog post that inspired this video: https://katinalee.com/blog-breaking-f...
