This is a recreation of a 1967 concert choreographed and performed by Kim On Wong in homage to the monk who immolated himself in protest of the Diem regime in South Vietnam. It was first offered as part of a service at the Midwest Buddhist Church on that year. The premier performance involved the use of a 16mm projector painting the stage and the dancer with colored flames and smoke. It was quite a stunning experience watching Kim dancing live in a macabre pas de deux with the flames. I'm afraid this recreation hardly does the performance justice. In more recent years I have come to see broader and deeper meaning in Kim's piece. Like all of his work every concept, every statement, every artistic act of his was a shell containing another shell containing.... "The mind is burning, ideas are burning, mind-consciousness is burning, mind-contact is burning, also whatever is felt as pleasant or painful or neither-painful-nor-pleasant that arises with mind-contact for its indispensable condition, that too is burning. Burning with what? Burning with the fire of lust, with the fire of hate, with the fire of delusion. I say it is burning with birth, aging and death, with sorrows, with lamentations, with pains, with griefs, with despairs." From The Fire Sermon by the Lord Buddha
