Ferguson Riot, Ferguson Protest, Ferguson Movement, or dare I say Ferguson Revolt or Revolution... these are a few of the Labels given to the events going on in major cities across the USA right now, and of course in Ferguson, Missouri for over 116 days in a row. Until you experience one of these events for yourself, it's hard to know what's actually happening there. On November 25th, 2014, my friend Matt and I were on our way to film at the UCLA campus when we received word of a Ferguson Protest occurring near us at Crenshaw & Martin Luther King Blvd, LA. We quickly diverted our course to those cross streets, and arrived to a pretty tame situation, with only about 25 protesters and a small but visible Police presence. After some interviews with Protesters, we followed six helicopters in the night sky who we believed were overhead the main body of the Protest. We found this group of Protesters just outside of USC's campus, on Figueroa marching towards Downtown. We joined them. I did try to cover this protest with balance and honesty. The police were out in very large numbers, but did a good job exercising their restraint on this occasion. The protesters were also high in numbers, but generally did a good job of controlling themselves and exercising their Human Rights. I saw people of all colors and shades, from many different backgrounds, students, business suits, anarchists, young people, old people, all ages. Many were fed up with the System, and some were calling for 'Revolution'. They truly appeared to be an inclusive and compassionate community that were unified by their distrust and distaste of the way things are under this current system. I went to the Ferguson Protest in LA as an Observer of our Freedom to Speech and our Freedom to Protest. These are our Human Rights to exercise as we each see fit. Exercising these Human Rights is a Powerful first step towards Progress, Expansion, and Growth as individuals and as a collective.
