Coronajihad – that is, the deliberate spreading of coronavirus – is the latest in a long-line of false claims by Modi’s BJP government of the negative impact of living with Muslims in India. Other remarks have encouraged attacks on Muslim men who are dating Hindu women and scores of Muslims were murdered amid rumours they traded or killed cows for beef. On 23 February 2020 in Delhi, Hindu nationalist mobs roamed the streets burning and looting mosques, homes, shops and businesses. Government policy too is reflecting bias towards Muslims such as the Citizenship Act which makes religion a basis for granting residency. Muslims have been joined by hundreds of thousands of Indians protesting against these plans. The police, however, have reportedly failed to intervene when government supporters attacked the protesters. In the north-eastern state of Assam around 1.9m people who were not granted citizenship when India published the state’s final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list in August are believed to be held in detention camps. Indian government sources state that a “declared foreigner” is someone who was once considered an Indian citizen but is now declared to be a foreigner by the Foreigners’ Tribunal in Assam. Can similarities be drawn between these camps and the camps in Xingjang? Is the anti-Muslim propaganda the forerunner of worse to come?
