Von Keller for Encyclopædia Britannica Films (EB Films), “India: Customs in the Village” (1957) is a color documentary short film highlighting life and tradition in an Indian village in the state of Rajasthan (Northwest India) from Hindu customs and the caste system to a village wedding and celebration. The film features photography by Jack Cardiff and was made in collaboration with University of Pennsylvania professor W. Norman Brown, American Indologist and Sanskritist who established the first academic department of South Asian Studies in North America. This film is a re-edit of a 1938 "World Windows" series short film titled “A Village in India.” The State of Rajasthan is in northwestern India. It was formed on 30 March 1949 when the states of the Rajputana Agency of the erstwhile British Empire in India were merged into the new Indian Union. Its capital and largest city is Jaipur. Early dawn hours in village - haze of sun filters through trees, silhouette of woman carrying basket on her head (0:51). Indian ox rest on ground in front of mud house with thatched roof (1:08). Young boy plays hand whistle to call village elders to Hindu temple for early morning prayers (1:15). Men of village wearing draped white cloth make their way from homes to temple (1:46). Villagers, young and old, male and female, gather by the communal well for drinking water, to bathe, wash clothes (2:20). Man picks miswak from Salvadora persica/ “toothbrush tree” to clean mouth (2:40). Villagers work on producing yarn using charkha (spinning wheel), young boy takes completed yarn from spinning wheel and forms it into long strands (3:08). Other villages carryout thousand year old technique of woodblock printing on textiles (4:04). Group of women in colorful orange, magenta saris retrieve water from well when man of untouchable “dalit” caste asks for water; Changing customs outlawing untouchable caste (4:51). Couple from Brahmins (priests and teachers) caste leave home in fancy dress to attend a celebration (5:13). Village celebration and festival: Men stand around in circle while two young men show off wrestling skills in the middle, everyone cheers (5:35). Celebration of wedding in village, men wearing colorful traditional clothing lead marching band playing large brass instruments, drums (6:41). Mother-in-law places dot of red powder “Kumkuma” on bride’s forehead, identifying her as married woman (7:04). Coming-of-age ceremony for two young men at Hindu temple, priest gives them red string signifying they are Brahmins (7:35). Special Brahmin custom: Priest whispers into boys’ ears for the first time while hidden under pink cloth (8:21). Celebration into the night for young bride and groom, fire breaks out when one of the thatched roofs catches a light, everyone flees in a panic (8:30). During daylight hours villagers survey damage of fire, start rebuilding village from scratch using found natural materials (10:12). Closing credits (10:37). Film ends (10:42).
