Training HeroRATs to detect illegally trafficked wildlife.

APOPO's team of innovators in Tanzania, in partnership with Endangered Wildlife Trust of South Africa, are exploring new applications for the HeroRATs. A team of rats is being trained to detect illegally trafficked wildlife (like pangolins) and endangered African hardwoods (like ebony) even when they are hidden among other smelly items used to conceal them. The proof-of-concept phase was generously funded by the UK government through the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund and the US government through U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This work continues thanks to funding from the German development agency GIZ and the World Conservation Network’s Pangolin Crisis Fund.
