The US Customs House was designed by the great architect Cass Gilbert and completed in 1907. Built at a time before the federal income tax was in effect, it shows the importance of the collection of customs to the operation of the federal government. Its Beaux-Arts design incorporates symbols of seafaring, commerce, and global history. In front are four statues by Daniel Chester French, representing the Four Continents: Asia, America, Europe, and Africa.
