Osteoderms are specialized bones in the skin of many vertebrates. They are not only useful in creating an extra tough layer of protection in the skin but in crocodilians they also play other roles. Osteoderms help alligators and crocodiles thermoregulate and also help to neutralize the acidosis that forms from carbon dioxide while under water for long periods of time. I do use the term armor plated but in reality bones are not armor and alligators and crocodiles can be injured by larger animals, people and each other.
