Niall Quinn's international career quite simply coincided with the Republic of Ireland's most successful period on the world stage. He was a technically skilled, physically imposing, and intelligent striker known for his aerial prowess, strong hold-up play, and ability to score important goals. He was particularly effective in pairing with other strikers, like Kevin Phillips at Sunderland, where his ability to hold up the ball and win aerial duels allowed his strike partner to thrive. He also played top flight football for Arsenal and Manchester City. Though he won a modest amount of club titles, he's held a good reputation amongst fans, in particular Sunderland fans. This was highlighted in March 2007 when, during his tenure as chairman, Quinn paid over £8,000 out of club funds to allow around 80 Sunderland fans to travel home by taxi when stranded at Bristol airport after being ejected from their scheduled flight home. Here he is shown scoring against the Netherlands, Liechtenstein, Turkey, the USA, Hungary, Northern Ireland, Wales, Denmark, Malta, Cyprus, and England. He also scored against Croatia, Israel, Macedonia, and South Africa. Quinn also received 92 caps for the Republic of Ireland national football team, scoring 21 times, which makes him Ireland's second highest goalscorer of all time. He also appeared with the Irish team at the UEFA European Football Championship of 1988 and two FIFA World Cups in 1990 and 2002, missing out on USA '94 due to injury. At the end of the video, he is shown scoring against England in a EURO '92 qualifying match at Wembley Stadium in London. Lee Dixon scored for England in the 9th minute, with a shot deflecting off Irish defender Steve Staunton. Kevin Moran came close to an equalizer with a shot against the right post before Paul McGrath lobbed the ball onto Niall Quinn's path for him to cancel out England's goal in the 27th minute. Despite Ireland having a stronger performance in the second half and creating numerous chances, particularly through Kevin Sheedy and Ray Houghton, they couldn't secure a second goal. The Irish would come to rue their missed chances as England ultimately finished ahead of Ireland in the group, securing qualification for Euro '92. Inexplicably, the Irish were eliminated despite having scored almost twice as many goals as the English and being undefeated. However, this 1-1 result would signal once again to the world that the Republic of Ireland were a force to be reckoned with. After all, the Irish had managed to beat the English 1-0 at their first-ever match at their first-ever tournament in EURO '88. I do not own the music.
